SIL an SDA Assessments Explained

Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) assessments and reports can feel overwhelming, but at their core, they answer one question: what does this person need to live safely, meaningfully and with the right support?

SIL evidence focuses on support needs: how much support is required, when it is needed, and why. This may include personal care, safety, decision-making, daily routines or behaviour support.

SDA evidence focuses on the home itself. Does the person need a specific type of housing because of physical access, sensory needs, safety, supervision or other disability-related needs?

SIL and SDA are important because they can support a person’s safety, independence and quality of life. The NDIS requires clear evidence to show these supports are reasonable and necessary.

At McCall, Occupational Therapists assess how a person functions day to day, then clearly document why the right supports and the right home are essential for safe and independent living.

We take a holistic approach, looking not only at the person and their supports, but also at the demands of everyday activities and the environment, especially the home.

Because sometimes, it’s not the person or the activity limiting participation. It’s the home itself.
