John – Charting his own path
John is a friendly and independent 59-year-old who has called McCall’s Piccadilly home his own for the past 10 years. Known for his helpful nature and adventurous spirit, John is someone who enjoys both the routines of daily life and the excitement of exploring new opportunities.
Each week, John keeps a busy schedule. He works nine days a fortnight at Scope Seven Hills, where he does packing work and shares plenty of laughs with his workmates. On Saturdays, he bowls at Windsor Bowling, and every couple of weeks he visits his parents. When he’s at home, John takes pride in pitching in around the house – whether it’s making his bed, doing the washing, or sweeping up the leaves. He’s the first to volunteer for chores others might avoid, showing just how much he values responsibility.
In his downtime, John enjoys the simple things that bring him happiness – like watching trains on TV, swimming, or relaxing in his bedroom. He’s also a big fan of fish and chips. Communication is an important part of John’s life, and he connects with others through sign language, writing, reading, and lip-reading.
At McCall, John is supported with community access once a fortnight, Supported Independent Living and Support Coordination. He loves hopping on the train and heading out on adventures, whether it’s a familiar outing or discovering somewhere new. His adventurous side is now taking him on a bigger journey – his very first holiday without family. This year, John is travelling with Careaway to South West Rocks, a milestone he’s very excited about. While his family have always taken him on wonderful holidays, this new experience marks a step toward greater independence.
Looking ahead, John is eager to continue exploring the world around him, both close to home and further afield. With his adventurous spirit, supportive network, and determination, there’s no doubt he will keep creating new memories and achieving his goals.
