Celebrating Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Month

John’s Story at Piccadilly

October is AAC Awareness Month – a time to recognise that communication looks different for everyone. At McCall, we believe that everyone has the right to express themselves, connect with others and be understood – no matter how they communicate

At our Piccadilly home, John shows how communication can take many forms. John uses a combination of lip reading, key signs and writing to share his thoughts, needs and ideas. The McCall team support him by using the same key signs and taking the time to ensure he feels heard and included in every conversation.

John’s environment also helps make communication easier. In his room, a whiteboard calendar outlines his appointments and daily activities, helping him stay organised and informed. A shared calendar in the hallway shows upcoming events for the whole house, so everyone knows what’s happening next.

Safety and independence are important parts of communication too. At night, John’s smoke alarm both flashes and vibrates, ensuring he can be alerted even while asleep. These simple but powerful tools help John communicate and stay connected in ways that work best for him.

AAC includes a wide range of supports that help people express themselves. For some, that might be a communication device or tablet. For others, like John, it’s a personalised mix of signs, visuals and the understanding of those around them.

AAC Awareness Month reminds us that communication isn’t about one approach – it’s about finding the right tools for each individual. When we adapt how we listen and respond, we create a more inclusive world where every person can share their voice.

At McCall, inclusion means everyone has a way to be heard.
