How Exercise Physiology Supports Individuals with Cerebral Palsy

It’s the most common physical disability in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in 500 Australians, but not all signs are visible at birth.

What is it?

It’s Cerebral Palsy (CP), which refers to a group of neurological disorders that affect a person’s ability to control movement, muscle coordination, tone, posture, and balance.

In most cases, CP is caused by damage to the developing brain during pregnancy or shortly after birth. While it is a permanent and lifelong condition, it does not typically worsen over time, and early intervention can make a big difference for those with the condition.

Early Intervention Empowers Independence and Quality of Life

With the right support at the right time, individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) can achieve meaningful improvements in mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

Research consistently shows that early intervention gives children the best opportunity to develop essential skills, regardless of diagnosis. And thanks to an expanding body of evidence, we now know people with CP can benefit from Exercise Physiology.

“We see firsthand how personalised, goal-oriented exercise can empower individuals to achieve meaningful outcomes.”

How Can Exercise Physiology Help?

Exercise Physiology has been shown to support individuals with CP by improving physical strength, mobility, and functional independence.

Through structured and targeted exercise programs, people with CP can:

  • Build muscle control
  • Manage symptoms such as muscle spasms
  • Improve their ability to perform everyday tasks

These outcomes contribute to better long-term physical health and quality of life.

Unique Programs for Unique Individuals

At McCall, we understand that every individual with CP presents differently depending on which part of the brain is affected. That’s why exercise programs must be personalised and adaptive.

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) work closely with clients to create routines that target areas such as:

  • Improving gross motor skills
  • Enhancing movement patterns
  • Preventing muscle deterioration and contractures
  • Strengthening posture and balance
  • Reducing pain and stiffness

The goal is to make movement more efficient and meaningful, encouraging participation in daily life with confidence and autonomy.

Real-World Impact

Working with people with CP isn’t just about achieving clinical outcomes, it’s about helping them gain control of their daily lives and work towards greater independence.

Our Exercise Physiologist, Nandu, recently had the opportunity to support Brendan, a 38-year-old living with Cerebral Palsy, through consistent and structured interventions focused on lower limb strength, core stability, and postural control.

Each session was tailored to Brendan’s unique goals, incorporating targeted exercises, regular progress tracking, and, most importantly, recognising his achievements along the way.

He has since reached key milestones, including increased standing time and improved mobility with the use of a rollator.

“Seeing his progress, whether it’s holding a static standing position for a few extra seconds or taking more confident steps with his rollator, reinforces why exercise is a crucial part of managing CP,” Nandu said.
